While I evaluated it using <a title=\"May Day! Confused comparing job offers?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prasadgupte.com\/blog\/compare-job-offers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some criteria<\/a>, the move itself wasn&#8217;t planned. This framework is what I used when starting with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prasadgupte.com\/blog\/goodbye-landmark-group-web-team\/\" title=\"Goodbye Web Team\">Landmark in Dubai<\/a>, and it also served my move to Babbel. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an overwhelming, topic but its important to get started! Here&#8217;s how to plan start planning your career:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Start with a slightly long-term vision. A 4-6 year horizon intertwining your personal &amp; professional aspiration &#8211; fueling the purpose that&#8217;ll fuel your passion.<\/li><li>Broken down to define short-term milestones (next 2 years). Enhancing your toolkit: skills, business, tech acumen, or just leadership skills &#8211; towards mastery.<\/li><li>An action plan. E.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prasadgupte.com\/blog\/1-page-resume-design-cv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Update your resume<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Basing career decisions on intuition is a bad idea \ud83d\udc4e\ud83c\udffc Whether you&#8217;re kicking off search or accepting an offer, start with figuring what you\u2019re optimizing for.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically kicking yourself out of your comfort zone! In this post, we&#8217;ll get started thinking what&#8217;s important to you. Everyone has needs. Being honest with yourself and prioritizing what&#8217;s important to you will not only help decide but also trade-off between opportunity cost and risk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Its personal. But steering life is important. Its scary and exciting. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentoring-club.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mentoring-club.com\/\">Sound boarding this with a mentor<\/a> is always a good idea. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The list below is how I look at choices &#8211; not necessarily in that order. Opportunity &amp; Toolkit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Enhances your toolkit?<\/li><li>Offers challenges, opportunities to learn?<\/li><li>Novelty*? A new domain \/ technology \/ vertical \/ market<\/li><li>Gives access to good mentors &amp; a network?<\/li><li>Opens&nbsp;new avenues in&nbsp;the future**?<\/li><li>Offers better title***? Consider position in the organization hierarchy, competition<\/li><li>Offers a better role? Influence v\/s Authority, Leadership<em><br><\/em><em>* Novelty alone shouldn&#8217;t be a driver<br>** Don&#8217;t overrate future prospects&nbsp;when starting your career<br>*** Opt for a rationalized, industry-wide title<br><\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Goals &amp; Passion<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.runnersgoal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/goals.jpg\" alt=\"Source: runnersgoal.com\" width=\"146\" height=\"146\"><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Makes best use of your passion?<\/li><li>Gets you a step closer to a future&nbsp;goal?<\/li><li>Aligns with personal&nbsp;interests &#8211; wealth, network, travel?<\/li><li>Gives a meaning, purpose to your life?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.&nbsp;<strong>Risks<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Leaving&nbsp;your comfort zone?<\/li><li>Chances of failing&nbsp;in the new role?<\/li><li>Relocating to a new country\/city?<\/li><li>Could this be short-term? Changing jobs too often?<\/li><li>Employment contract? Notice period?<\/li><li>Is your gut sounding an alarm?<br><em>* Answering <strong>No<\/strong> means <strong>low<\/strong> risk, <strong>high<\/strong> score<br><\/em><em>** Taking no action also has its own risk<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Benefits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Vacation\/travel allowance<\/li><li>Reimbursements: telecom, fuel, gym, etc.<\/li><li>Insurance &amp;&nbsp;Medical coverage for self\/family<\/li><li>Loans, Child care\/education, Discounts, etc.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Does the organization value people?<\/li><li>Hires for the long-run, recognizes &amp; invests in people?<\/li><li>Promotes education, training, conferences?<\/li><li>Fits your personality, aligns with your values?<\/li><li>Has well-defined vision, mission, values, ethics and sticks to it?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Work-Life Balance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Work hours, timezone, daily commute<\/li><li>Flexible hours, working remotely<\/li><li>Does it require to be away from home &#8211; travel, relocation?<\/li><li>Work pressure,&nbsp;Time-off<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Industry &amp; Brand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The market\/sector has positive outlook?<\/li><li>Is it a dynamic, recognized brand? leader \/ growing&nbsp;market share<\/li><li>Stability, Risk, Recession sensitive, layoffs<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hope this helps you solve the problem of plenty \ud83d\ude42 I would love to hear your ideas on improving this further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re a leader, discuss with your team to understand what&#8217;s important to individuals.
