I cannot explain how exciting it is to cross borders on foot without any control what so ever.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 133px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/LuF-M0CRLm-oq4LmOj1aBxNIvMio8zPnVYoKDEPAqcW7=w472-h577-no\" alt=\"St. Louis Grenze\" width=\"133\" height=\"163\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. Louis Grenze<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Basel, where I was based, happens to be the north-west tip of Switzerland, bordering with France &amp; Germany &#8211; making it an international city. In fact the airport is also shared by the 3 countries, and you can choose to pass through either country&#8217;s passport control. There are 2 main railways &#8211; the Swiss SBB &amp; French SNCF station, and the German DB station.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 927px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-7zGadtWjEas\/U5VSNIc9WZI\/AAAAAAAAt7k\/H2-4DD8LVG4\/w927-h695-no\/P1110837.JPG\" alt=\"German border crossing\" width=\"927\" height=\"695\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">German border crossing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 127px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-w0m7LRQHekI\/U5la9iP4bOI\/AAAAAAAAt6w\/4WR94OoasKo\/w753-h695-no\/IMG_20140612_131521.jpg\" alt=\"The Intersection\" width=\"127\" height=\"117\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Intersection<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 3 countries meet at a point on the river Rhine, and the intersection is celebrated by the Rhinecenter mall on its banks. In fact, we walked in 3 countries in a matter of an hour, although it wasn&#8217;t good enough to mark them &#8216;done&#8217;. Switzerland also shares its borders with Austria on the east, and Italy on the south. Swiss cars bear the Swiss flag on their number plates<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n, while their European friends boast the EU flag with the country code. It is also believed to be a true democracy. Although the ministers are elected, they are completely powerless. It is as though they have an approval threshold. Everything beyond a certain value, importance &amp; impact needs to be decided by the people through voting. And people care because they&#8217;re made to feel important by the government.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 141px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/img.zonebourse.com\/reuters\/2014-03-16T162637Z_1_CBREA2F19OW00_RTROPTP_2_SWITZERLAND.JPG\" alt=\"Information Handouts\" width=\"141\" height=\"85\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Information Handouts<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the time, the Swiss defense ministry was contemplating modernization of their fighter fleet, and sadly people voted against. I think with so few people, complete literacy &amp; national systems in place, you can manage that. Swiss citizens are also very secure; in the event of a nuclear disaster, every citizen can be accommodated in a secure bunker. We were lucky to walk into one such basement with thick walls, metal door &amp; an air purification system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I yearn to see such peaceful borders in Asia &amp; Africa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Indians, the word border only means war &amp; tension to us.
